"Hope for the Nation"
Read Isaiah 6:1-8.
Our country celebrates Independence Day on July 4, marking 236 years as a
nation. As we honor this day, many are asking, "What went wrong with America?"
First, as a nation, WE HAVE FORGOTTEN GOD. Isaiah 5:12 states the problem, "But they have no regard
for the deeds of LORD, no respect for the work of His hands." For most of our 236
years as a nation, America’s political leadership and most of our citizens have
lived by the belief that America has a special role in God’s historic plan. Without
a firm belief in the Creator God of the Bible, no morality can sustain itself. There
are many examples in the Bible where people forgot God and each one did what was
right in his/her own eyes. The result was a collapse of law and order and human
decency or the tyranny of oppressive rulers. "If the foundations are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?" (Psalms 11:3). We must restore the Biblical foundation on
which this nation was founded so that America can once again become great. Isaiah
6:1-4 shows that the remedy is AN EXALTED VIEW OF GOD. (Cf. Deuteronomy 8:18-20).
A second and related problem is THE SEPARATION OF VIRTUE FROM LIBERTY.
"They have rejected the law of the LORD Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy
One of Israel" (Isaiah 5:24b). The Founders of America were unanimous
in their view that only a virtuous people could remain free. The reason is simple:
Virtue restrains our passions and desires. We must return to the concept
that each of us has a personal responsibility to maintain a society of law and order.
The remedy to the moral debacle in America today is found in Isaiah 6:5-7.
It is REPENTANCE AND FAITH IN JESUS CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD. "Righteousness
exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people" (Proverbs 14:34). The Courts have ruled that the Ten Commandments
could not be displayed on the walls of the public schools or on the walls of our
courthouses. This is contrary to the Constitution which states that the government
could not establish a religion or prohibit the free exercise of it. There seems
to be a conspiracy in this country to erase all mention and memory of God and Biblical
Christianity in this country.
The third problem is that we’ve allowed politicians, particularly
in Washington, to become our masters instead of our servants. Our freedom
doesn’t come from Washington D C. Our Declaration of Independence tells us that
liberty is a birthright; it is inalienable – that is, it can’t be taken away because
Liberty’s source is God, and the guarantee of it in our country is
the first "contract with America," the Constitution. Today we need a renewed
view of the mission to which God calls us: "’Whom shall I send? And who
will go for us?’ And I said: ‘Here I am. Send me." (Isaiah 6:8). "Choose
for yourselves today whom you will serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve
the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). "If My people who are called by My name will
humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then
I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14). GOD BLESS AMERICA!
