The Child

Revelation 12

Intro: Revelation is a powerful book, uses multi-layered symbols to communicate truth. Many think Revelation only teaches about the end-times, Jesus' second coming; not true! Passage you just heard was John's description of Christ's birth; Christmas as pictured in Revelation. The woman about to give birth to a child; the dragon wants to devour the child! Revelation 12 pictures Christmas as a universal war, centered on this child.

Identity of the Child! (Read Revelation 12:5.) Who is the child? John tells us just enough to help us identify Him. "A son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter." Clear reference to Psalm 2, a picture of worldwide rebellion against God, and the King that God sets up to rule the world. (Read, explain Psalm 2.) John: This Baby is God's Son, the King of the whole world, who will shatter all rebellion against God! Jesus is the center of this warfare between the dragon and Almighty God, because Jesus the rightful ruler of this world!

Activity of the Child! (Read Revelation 12:5.) "Snatched up." Gk. verb: "to take by force," snatched from the clutches of death. Jesus was dead, He was apparently defeated by the dragon. But He was "snatched up" by His resurrection from the dead. He was "snatched up" by His ascension to Heaven "to God and to His throne." (Read Philippians 2:5-11.) Jesus is the center of this warfare between the dragon and Almighty God, because Jesus is the rightful ruler of this world! The Baby in the manger, the Carpenter-turned-preacher who died on the cross, Jesus Christ, is the soon coming King! (Read Revelation 19:11-16.)

Application: Now is the time to respond. Fall on your knees before the Crucified, Resurrected King of the World. Jesus is calling you to turn from your sins, rebellion. Pledge your allegiance to Him; He is willing to forgive! As I explained once to some teenagers...3 things you need to know about Revelation! 1) The world is going to get worse before it gets better. 2) The reason (for #1) is because the whole world will follow the dragon's champion, the antichrist, in rebellion against God. 3) Jesus has won, and He will win! How does this apply? Whose side are you on? Christ's or the dragon's?
